An American Classic Painting

Today the weather was great. We had a little get-together at a friends hours. In front of me on the table was a hot dog and coke (the cherry I added for composition). It looked so American and a true classic. I took the photo with my iphone, then to the studio

The Next Big Thing

Lately, I have been having a problem with motivation. It seems that once my attention is reflected, like the recent flood scare and recovery, I loose my way with creating art. I am now in a process of trying to motivate myself to begin painting again on a daily basis.

Every morning I scan the internet searching for the one artist or work to take me to the next level of motivation and my desire to begin creating art again. I have never felt more distant than I have in the last few weeks. I know this block is temporary, A balancing act I have no cure for..except to search for the next big challenge.

Love for painting

My first post since the September flood. Everything is almost back to normal. I apologize for not posting during this month. It is not that I had nothing to say. I didn't think my small problems were relevant compared to the people who got hammered by the flood. It is important that I get all my repairs and maintenance in order before I can feel the muse. I started where I left off. A sister piece to "I Love Tootsie Roll". This daily painting is titled, "Love for Painting". Lolly-pop heart and artist brushes equals love for painting.

@ Cherries as One

“Two Cherries as One” is my daily painting today.
When two nacho chips are stuck together, they count as one.

That goes for cherries and marriage.

Sudden Recall

Without realizing, I painted of a storefront as a subject for all my classes called, “Market”. A market recalled from a memory as a child. A pleasant memory of my mother sending me to Pidge’s Market to buy groceries she needed for dinner. She would spoil me with an extra dime to buy something for myself (candy bar). The painting now sits in Lancaster, Pennsylvania for a class on September 12th.

My last posts was about a 30x40 inch painting I made in the early 90’s. It came to me as a sudden recall that all the research accumulated for “Nickel Tour of Lancaster County was present in the “Market “

It is amazing how artists can store images and recall those images both real and made-up when creating a painting. What I thought was pure imagination,

I had reproduced a piece of an old painting I did twenty years ago.

The Last of It's Kind

Talk about a strange and great day. First thing in the morning, I had to relocate a captured groundhog that was terrorising the neighborhood. Drove ten miles to make sure he does not make his way back. At one o’clock attended a party with a few guys from my childhood and High School. They called it a “Man Party”. Lots of old stories and memories, It was fun.

Left around five o’clock and drove to our local community college to visit my artist friend Mike Molnar, a true master. While observing the class, the one thing that hit me is how slow and meticulous everyone was painting. It will take each student a whole semester to complete their art. Too slow for me, it was time to leave.

During my ten years of teaching art, It has become natural to complete a painting by the end of the class. I like my fast broad strokes and painterly style. Even my masterworks, which require more detail, have to be completed in due time.

In 1995, I created a painting which took almost six months. “A Nickel Tour of Lancaster County”. It was the grand finale of the large detailed acrylic one hair burst painting. Pure drudgery, like building the pyramids.

The last of it’s kind.

If you think I’m kidding, check it out!

Another Reason to be a Daily Painter

I'm in Charleston S.C. On the south end of King Street was an art gallery called Sophisticated Whimsy. They sold four paintings of mine, all tropical because it was an island style gallery and a good one. Sanibel Island, Miami, Key West, and most likely every city in Florida or possibly every state has an Island Style Gallery.
Last year they called to inform me that they were closing the gallery. I was not surprised they blamed the economy. I made a special trip to Charleston to pick up my unsold paintings. The cost of the trip reduced the profits of the four sold paintings. The building is now vacant, Sophisticated Whimsy, is still painted on the window,as if the tenant is waiting for them to return. Sadly, I'm not.
Another reason to be a daily painter, I love the independence of being a daily painter. No gallery, no worry about the gallery closing. No special one thousand mile trip. No commissions, a perfect transaction between me and an art patron.
On the other hand, the art gallery is important for the big sales of my "masterworks". These are the people who negotiate with our art patrons. Most represent us well and should be a part of our art business strategy.
Charleston is a big art community with many galleries. Time to peruse the galleries to see which one is a good fit for my art.

Teabox and Kettle Daily Painting

I had a painters block today which does not happen very often. I have so much inspiration around me, but that was not the problem. Sometimes an artist wants a new direction. Something to get real excited about. The muse was not with me today.

I was picking out a painting to do at one of my classes when I came across,”Teabox”. I have painted this subject in my classes several times in a 16x20 canvas. How would it look in a 6x6 size and how long would it take me. I can paint this particular painting with my eyes closed. I was right, Teabox on a 6x6 was an investment in time of only 45 minutes.

A testament to practice and repetition.

Will I sell it for less since it took me less time? No!
Starting bid on my eBay auction is $49. Check out the auction,

Independence Day Original Art

"Independence Day Read",
painted twelve years ago as a calendar project, I never finished.

During my teenage years, we had a large porch on our house. My father enjoyed decorating for the summer patriotic holidays, spending much of his time grooming the lawn and shrubs. When finished, he would clean up then sit at a wicker table enjoying a beer and cucumber salad. Gazing out at the lawn with a smile of satisfaction, he would sip his beer. My mother would read, on a matching wicker sofa.

All Children Are Aritist

The other day, I was cutting grass in my back yard. My neighbor John walked down my drive with a paper in his hand. It was a painting by his grandson Billie, John wanted to know if Billie had talent. He mentioned that Billie's father was a musician and wanted some verification that Billie has artistic genes. I told him what I believed, that Billie, if he continues to paint he should become a very good artist. I know, I was a bit evasive, and did not, or could not know, if Billie has talent. All children are artist, somewhere along the line, many boys and girls are told that they can't draw or paint and move on to other skills. It's my guess that art is learned not gifted. Yes, there maybe examples of artist coming out of the womb wearing a beret, children maybe born with talent, but talent itself is very elusive. It can be lost very easily in our early years if not cultivated, or worse discouraged.

Citurs Trio Daily Painting

“Citrus Trio”, is now on eBay with a starting bid of $49.00. I love citrus, especially in my beer during the summer. When I’m with my friends at a pub on the outside deck, they laugh when I say, “Citrus makes me happy”. I like the little pieces of lime stuck to the top rim of the beer bottle. It’s when the bartender squeezes the lime slice inside the neck of the bottle which is condensing with drops of moisture...excuse me,

I ‘m leaving to get a bottle of Corona.

Kettle

When asked a question, “What is the most favorite art you have created”. The answer usually is the one I’m working on. But that’s not always true.
Recently I sold a painting simply called the Kettle and I miss it. It was on the auction blog for a long time. During the auction I was confused why the Kettle would not be purchased and I still am, and yet, other works which I’m not sure of their appeal, will sell, “go figure”.
Sometimes the muse is with you and sometimes not. The Kettle was a day the muse visited, It took only a few hours and, voila! Like a teacher on graduation day, I was feeling a bit sad letting this painting go. It”s like that phrase in the Godfather, “

this is the life we choose

Daily painting: 1950 Studebaker

1950 Studebaker was a really cool car in the mid 50's. It resembled a jet with it's pointed grill.

My brother Chuck once had a brush with this Studebaker. My mother sent him to the grocery store. Chuck wasn't looking when crossing the street and got tapped. Chuck was lucky,  I could not imagine getting hit with the pointed grill. The releived driver of the Studebaker drove him home unharmed. Mom never asked him to go to the store for a long time. 6x6 oil painting on Ampersand Gesso Board. Starting bid on Ebay is $49.00.
Check it out on Ebay.
